Oviraptor philoceratops is a caenagnathid/oviraptorid dinosaur with a fascinating history:

  • Size: 1.5-2 meters long, about 1 meter tall, and 15-35 kg. Turkey to emu-sized.
  • The crest: A bony crest on its skull, similar to (but smaller than) a cassowary's crest.
  • Beak: A toothless, parrot-like beak — but with unusual jaw mechanics that suggest a varied diet.
  • The name: Oviraptor means 'egg thief' — because the first fossil was found sitting on a nest of what was thought to be Protoceratops eggs. Scientists assumed it was stealing eggs.
  • The redemption: Later discoveries showed that the eggs were actually Oviraptor eggs — the animal was not stealing them, it was brooding them! But the name stuck (scientific naming rules mean it will always be Oviraptor, even though the 'egg thief' description was wrong).
  • Brooding behavior: We now know Oviraptor sat on its nest to incubate its eggs, just like modern birds — direct evidence of bird-like parental care in non-avian dinosaurs.
